 NEXT LEVEL DJ Skills Academy - Beginners in asociation with Reform Records

Whether you are an aspiring bedroom DJ or a youth worker looking for something alternative and engaging for young people then this is for you. We offer 5-week Beginners' courses starting at regular intervals, as well as 1 to 1 tuition for the more advanced DJ (please call us for details).


Cost: £25 per hour 
Days: Wednesdays
Times: 5:30-6:30pm
Participants: 1-1 tuition

In this 5-week course you will learn:

- basic equipment set-up
- basic music theory
- mixing techniques
- scratching techniques
- CDjing

Aims:

      ·         To identify different music tempos and how they are mixed.

·         From compiling sets to play in clubs & radio broadcasts.
·         A good understanding of how the DJ equipment works and in different environments.
(E.g. Mixer controls, EQs, Faders, inputs & outputs)
Objectives/Learning Outcomes:
·         Confident understanding of DJ equipment and how it is used.
 (More you know the equipment the better the DJ you will be)
·         Will be able to mix properly whilst using the mixer features at the same time.
Course Structure:
Session 1
·         What’s your format? E.g. Turntables, CDJs, Serato etc.
·         Equipment controls & what they do e.g. EQs, Faders, Gain, Monitors, FX etc.
·         Basics on beat matching & mix structure.
Session 2
·         What’s your genre? E.g. Drum & Bass, Hardcore, Hip Hop etc.
·         Originality! Skills & techniques that you make your own.
Session 3
·         DJ jargon. Beat juggling, cuts, scratches & concepts. (Language barrier)
·         Setting up DJ equipment (What plugs in were) in depth.
Session 4
·         Back 2 back mix session. Watching other DJs & listing techniques
Session 5
·         Promoting you as a DJ. (Club DJ, Radio DJ, Disco DJ, Wedding DJ etc)
·         Record a mix to be submitted to Reform Records.
·         Practise makes perfect.

- I found this course useful because I got to find out how to DJ and build my confidence.
- I found out a lot more about DJing, what songs to mix and how to get set up.

Sound Gallery is a social enterprise with many years experience of engaging and inspiring people through the creative process of making music. Since May 2008, we have been running a professional recording and music production studio in the basement complex at Exeter Phoenix. Sound Gallery Studios include a recording studio, live room, amp room and two rehearsal rooms. We also offer a wider range of music workshops, music technology courses, music industry networking events and live music showcases.
