SiMPTI - Life-Long Learning Develoment programme
SUITABLE FOR: suitable for 19+ This programme offers the unique opportunity to gain first-hand experience in a professional recording studio and to learn directly from sound engineers, producers and music technology tutors at Sound Gallery Studios. The programme is suitable for those who have graduated from a course in sound engineering or music technology as well as aspiring producers and self-taught sound engineers, who are looking to enter the world of work. Entry requirements Participants should have familiarity with basic sound engineering. If you are interested in enrolling in the programme please send us your CV with your contact details, which will be followed by an interview (face to face or over the phone).

Hunting down ‘problem’ frequencies

Learn how to develop your recognition of frequencies

Compression, Gates, De-essing, Limiting and all those other dynamic processes

Dynamic parameters and what they mean

Side chaining 

How do we know when it’s working? Applying dynamics in a mix

 

Effects

 

Reverb & delay, modulation effects, distortion and time/pitch-shifting 

Parameters

How to use reverb and delay in a mix

Using effects creatively 

 

Microphone Techniques and Recording

 

Microphone types - characteristics and uses

How to mic up a variety of instruments for recording and/or live situations

Each session will consist of discussion, demonstrations and practical exercises that link to hand-out sheets detailing the theory behind the practice. Students will then have the opportunity to use the Sound Gallery computer facilities to apply what they have learnt on the course.

Sound Gallery is a social enterprise with many years experience of engaging and inspiring people through the creative process of making music. Since May 2008, we have been running a professional recording and music production studio in the basement complex at Exeter Phoenix. Sound Gallery Studios include a recording studio, live room, amp room and two rehearsal rooms. We also offer a wider range of music workshops, music technology courses, music industry networking events and live music showcases.
